Neither Mark nor Linda complained about the hurdles they had jumped to get where they were now. They spoke enthusiastically about experiencing life in a variety of places, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Connecticut, Texas, and now California.

A lone household will usually not solve a neighborhood problem. Solutions are much more likely when there exists a genuine society of neighborspeople who know one another, who are in the habit of getting together as a group, and who therefore feel empowered to act in the neighborhood's interest. Murray Bookchin argues in The Rise of Urbanization and the Decline of Citizenship that individuals isolated from one another are powerless. By contrast, individuals who form an active local society gain the ability to influence conditions.
